The Toluna Surveys Scam: Why You Should Never Join

By | November 15, 2015

Toluna ReviewYou are most probably visiting my website, because you found out about Toluna and now you want to know if this is a legit survey site and if you should really join it. For most people who are looking for ways to make money online, taking surveys is nothing new. In fact survey sites like this pop up like mushrooms, because so many people want to make easy money online. Unfortunately there are so many survey sites that scam people. So what about this survey site? Can we call it the Toluna Surveys Scam?

I tested this survey site myself and if you think that you really can make money easily in a short time, I have to disappoint you. Most survey sites just try to manipulate you and want to make you think, that you can even get rich only by taking surveys. Yeah, I know that would be great, but unfortunately, this is not the case. I mean, if this really would be possible, everyone would do it, right?

Okay, so now let´s have a closer look at Toluna. Hope you are ready!

What is Toluna?

When I joined Toluna, the first thing I thought to myself was: Wow this website looks really professional! However to be honest, almost every survey site looks good, so this is not really exceptional. What I really found exceptional was, that they even have something like a board where everyone can post his status and members there can even blog a little bit.

I have never seen this before, but to me it is clear, what Toluna intends with this. They want to make their members feel home and they want them to spend as much time as possible on this survey site, so they do not leave Toluna. Okay, definitely nothing wrong with that, it is just a smart strategy and as long as the members of Toluna have fun, everything is okay in my opinion.

Earn points

You can do several thing in Toluna. You can complete normal surveys or mobile surveys and you can do some product testing. That means you test products which are not even on the market yet for big companies.

If you are familiar with survey sites, you probably know already, that you do not earn money by taking surveys or testing products. You always earn points on those survey sites, in my opinion this is a manipulating strategy, but we will come to that later.

After joining you start with 500 points at Toluna. You can cash out your points for several rewards and I have to admit, that Toluna really has a lot of rewards to offer. However a lot of the rewards are just useless and I bet that no one really want a key chain from Toluna. Paypal payment and Amazon giftcards on the other hand are okay.

There are some other ways you can earn points and rewards at Toluna, but it is not really important, because it is based on luck, I am only talking about facts in this review.

So till now Toluna seems to be a good survey site, right? That is what I thought too, but then it went downhill.

Getting points is hard as hell

You get 10000 – 15000 points per completed survey. This number can vary, but most of the time it is that amount of points. So it seems, that you can get rewards quickly at this survey site. However all survey sites are the same here, and Toluna is not an exeption. You will have a hard time to get your points, even if it seems to be easy and fast.

When I tried to complete a survey, I completed 50% of the survey before Toluna told me that I was not qualified for this survey. I tried it again and again, but it happened so often that it could not be be accident. So that means, that I took a lot of surveys for nothing. I did not earn a single point for all the surveys I started to complete.

So it took me a long time to reach the amount of points to get my rewards, since I was not qualified for most of the surveys. Nothing new here, this is typical for survey sites.

You should cash out frequently

If you do not cash out frequently, it is possible that you lose all of your points, no matter how many points you had. This is what happened to a lot of members of Toluna. They gathered a large amount of points and then their account was deactivated. Even if they contacted the support, they never got their points back. Worst thing about it is, that they worked a really long time for that and that it means that they did a lot of work for Toluna for free.

Toluna scam

Reviews of Toluna on Survey Police

That also means that it is almost impossible to get a Paypal payment, since your points probably expire before you reached the amount of points to get it. Funny, huh? What a great survey site …. NOT!

Is Toluna a scam?

Even though some people are satisfied with Toluna, I say that this survey site is a scam. Most rewards are just useless and surprise, surprise, the really good rewards are impossible to reach for a lot of people, since their points expire. I mean, how impertinent is that? They let their members work for them, but they do not pay them.

Stay away from the Toluna scam!

I would not recommend to join this survey site to any of my readers.

Why taking survey is a waste of time

Most survey sites are just manipulating. They want to make their members think, that taking survey is a quick way to make money online, but it really is not. In fact you only earn a few cents for most completed surveys. You may earn a lot of points, but if you do the math, you see that those points per survey are worth only a few cents. That is why I´ve said that it is manipulating that you earn points at survey sites.

Further completing the surveys takes a lot of time. It can take 20 minutes to 90 minutes to complete a survey and remember: Most of the times you only earn a few cents per survey. Would you really work for, let´s say, 50 cents per hour? I am sure the answer is “No!”.

The worst thing about survey sites is, that they scam a lot of their members and they even blame their members for that. Deactivated accounts, or website crashes as soon as you complete a survey are common for survey sites. Most people wait for their rewards several months, if they get their rewards at all.

Come on, is that really what you want?

I mean, some people are happy with survey sites. They do it for the fun(?) or something like that and that is okay. However if you really want to make money online, forget about survey sites. Do not waste your time with that.

How you can make money online

In my opinion affiliate marketing is a very easy way to make money online. It definitely takes work and you will not get rich overnight, but if you stick with it, you WILL make money in the end. I am not talking about a few cents here, you can make a living online.

I know it, because I make money with affiliate marketing. I was a total beginner when I was looking for ways to make money online, so you do not need any experience for that. The only thing you need is education and you have to know where to get that.

I signed up at this online community for affiliate marketing. They provide a training on affiliate marketing which is suited to beginners. They have over 400000 members and this community exists since over ten years.

Joining is for free, so if you are really interested in making money online, have a look at this for more information.

I am sure this helps!

I hope that I could help you with my Toluna review.

    Hi Pierre,

I wish I could agree with you but I can’t. I hardly do surveys nowadays due to my busy schedule but Toluna is one of those that I will still find the time to do even if I’m busy. I find that they’re reliable and consistent with their payment and so far, I’m getting paid monthly from them so I have no issues there. For sure, the pre-qualifying questions can be annoying but I guess they are necessary to weed out suitable candidates for the survey.

The survey website that I find is a complete waste of my time would be Opinion World. Have you tried that before? In my opinion, it’s a totally bad survey. I’m sorry I don’t really remember the details now but I got so peeved with them at one point that I’ve completely blocked them from ever sending me a survey again.

      Hey Yvonne,

thank you for your sharing your experience.
There are some people who do not have any problems with Toluna, that is right. However unfortunately a lot of people have those problems and that can´t be accidental. 🙁

I did not try Opinion World yet, but I will have a look at it in the future!

Thank you for your comment Yvonne.

    hi Pierre
I am with you that survey sites are crap and Toluna seems no different. They seem to boost the number of points you get per survey, potentially to make it more attractive. But let me guess you need some stupid amount of points like 100 000 points to get the key chain? A key chain that no one wants to get anyways. I would be pissed if I was half done completing a long survey only to be told that I did not qualify. Were you still in the midst of completing the background questions? And to lose your points for no apparent reason after a certain time? I would be pissed at that too.

      Hey Emily,

yes survey sites aredefinitely a waste of time. Sure you have to get tons of points to get the “good” prices (which aren´t really good).

I have come across Toluna before and I was never interested in the system. It takes too much time to really see any results.

I know for a fact that to have your own business is the way to go. It is very difficult for you to have financial freedom if you depend on surveys. It is a way to make some cents, but it is not worth your precious time.

I hope that more people will see what you have written here and take your recommendation. I have used your recommendation to have my own business online and it prospering daily.

    Thanks again for great content.

I am so happy to hear that you have used my recommendation and that you are building your own online business right now. That´s the way you go!
      Wish you much success Jason.

    Hi Pierre,

Thanks for alerting your readers about this waste of time survey site – Toluna.

Generally, these sites get a good commission for their clicks but rarely pass them on to the followers who basically work for peanuts. The main thrust of many survey sites is that they use people to do the work, and then
they disappear. People are left with no money for the work they did and the scammers laugh all the way to the bank.

We need to have the internet regulated more closely to weed out scammers and time wasters.
Thanks for exposing this scam and saving people from getting cheated.

      Hey PJ,

perfect description of a survey site. Right to the point 🙂
      Thank you for this comment!

so many of these survey sites and some a real scam and some legit but ive done lots of research and joined up on some and one thing is this…… dont expect to become wealthy from these as there few and far between offer little value for time spent you would literry have to sign up to hundreds to to make anything decent and by doing that be prepared to clean your inbox every day.

try wealthy affiliate you have to work hard but its rewarding

    1. Pierre Post author

      Hey Steven,

you are definitely right here. You should not expect to become wealthy by taking surveys, however a lot of people just want to make a little bit extra money. The problems is that so many survey sites don´t pay at all, so the time is wasted. I do not want my readers to waste their time with useless survey sites like Toluna.

Good to hear that you are also a satisfied member of Wealthy Affiliate. It is definitely the best program out there if you want to make money online and yes, it is definitely a lot of work, but if it would be easy everyone would do it.

      Thank you for your comment!

  6. Mara

    Hi Pierre,
Really honest review and something I really appreciate. I think it’s fair to say I’ve been sucked in a few times when trying to look at ways to earn money online. The saying “if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is” now stands true in my mind, so thanks for warning people off Toluna!
    Best wishes, Mara.

    1. Pierre Post author

      Hey Mara,

don´t worry about it! We all have been sucked in one or two times (or even more). It just happens, but I am happy to hear that you learned your lesson, haha 🙂 . That is definitely true Mara, working online needs a lot of dedication and almost nobody makes a lot of money immediately.

      Thank you for your comment!
