You want to rank high in the search engines with the articles on your website? Of course you do! Well if you want to rank high with your articles you have to use the right keywords. However not every keyword is the same and you probably will not rank high with every keyword you are targeting. Don´t worry there is a tactic which you can use to increase your chance to rank high with the articles on your website. Get to know which keywords are better for that. Long Tail Keywords or Broad Keywords? Read below!
First of all if you are a total newbie to keyword research you should check out my post How to use Keywords in an article. I explain everything you need to know in this post if you are a beginner.
So let´s get started!
Broad Keywords are definitely easier to find since they are not that specific. Most of the times broad keywords have not more than three words. They often have much more traffic than long tail keywords and unfortunately they have a lot of more competition too.
A lot of companies pay to rank for broad keywords since they get a lot of traffic with them.
I give you some examples below.
Long Tail Keywords
It is definitely easier to rank for long tail keywords. Why? Long tail keywords are more specific and they describe your topic more detailed. The keyword phrases usually contain three or more words. Long tail keywords have less competition since they are more specific as I said before.
Confused? No problem I give you some examples below!
Long Tail Keywords vs Broad Keywords
Here I will give you some examples of long tail keywords and broad keywords. It can be a little bit confusing if you are a beginner and you do not get some examples.
Broad Keyword: pizza delivery
Long Tail Keyword: fast pizza delivery in london
Broad Keyword: Great White Sharks
Long Tail Keyword: Where do Great White Sharks Live
Here I performed a search with the Keyword Tool Jaaxy for the example Great White Sharks.
[QSR shows you the exact amount of competition for that keyword. KQI shows you if you should use that keyword. Red means you should not use it since there is too much competition. SEO is a rating. The higher the score (up to 100) the higher your chances to rank on the first page of the search engines.]
So you can see that it will be very hard to rank for the broad keyword. What about the long tail keyword? Have a look!
You see? Long tail keywords are very specific and they explain in detail what your article is about if you decide to put a long tail keyword in you title. The competition for those keywords is often times very low. It will be easy to rank high for that keyword phrase.
How to find long tail keywords and broad keywords
You can find long tail keywords and broad keywords if you use a keyword research tool. As I showed you above I use the keyword tool Jaaxy for that.
Why do I use Jaaxy for my Keyword Research?
If you want to increase your rankings you have to use a keyword tool which shows you your exact competition. A lot of keyword tools do not show you that. They only show if your competition is low medium or high. That is not what I want.
Jaaxy is a very accurate keyword tool which shows you the exact amount of competition for your keyword and it even shows you how high chances are to rank on the first page of the search engines for your targeted keyword as you can see on the images above. You can find my opinion and a detailed description of Jaaxy here.
It is very important to know the exact amount of competition for you keyword. A lot of competition means that it is hard to rank on the first page of the search engines for that keyword. You should always take keywords with a competition below 400. Want to try a search in Jaaxy to see the exact amount of competition for your keyword? Go ahead and perform a search.
How to rank in Google – 1st page
Now you know how to do keyword research and you know the difference between long tail keywords and broad keywords. You might want to know now how to rank in Google – First page of course! As I told you it is easier to rank high in the search engines for long tail keywords. However there is a little trick you can use to make it possible to rank high with broad keywords too.
You can use broad keywords in your articles. You just have to find broad keywords with a competition below 400. A competition of 400 is pretty high but if you use some additional long tail keywords in your articles it will be easier to rank for your broad keyword.
How to do that
In the past articles ranked high in the search engines if your post was stuffed with your targeted keyword. Today this won´t work anymore so you just have to place a few keywords.
- Use your broad keyword in the title and in the URL of your post.
- Use your broad keyword at the end of your post.
- Use your broad keyword in the ALT Text of one image of your article. (You should always use images in your articles. If you don´t do it now!)
- Look for 3 – 5 long tail keyword with a competition below 200, or better, below 100 and use them 1 or 2 times in your article.
- Use your long tail keywords in the ALT Text of your other images.
Why that will work
As I said it might be hard to rank for a broad keyword but if you place some long tail keywords in your article which have lower competition you will rank high for the long tail keywords first. Those keywords are a support for your ranking for the broad keyword. The search engines will notice your rankings for the keywords with lower competition and rise your rankings for the broad keyword.
This can take some time so don´t worry.
However as I said you will not rank for all of your targeted keywords but this can be a huge support for your rankings.
Warning: Don´t go crazy on that!
Don´t use keywords too often in your article and make sure that your article sounds still naturally. If you start to write articles stuffed with keywords and you beginn to write weird just to implement another keyword it will definitely hurt your rankings. The search engines will take notice of that and your visitors will not have a good read.
You should always be more concerned about your visitors then on keywords!
